wednesday, june 18 (03) [link]jane: There's something bohemian and glamorous about djing a college radio station. No, really, there is. Because you're all alone, surrounded by stacks and stacks of music spanning decades, and it's all up to you - you are the master, the arbiter of taste, the music maven composing the soundtrack to your own insular world. And if you wanted to you could get naked and dance among the LPs and CDs while you gleefully play Alice in Chains right up next to Belle and Sebastian.
Or maybe that's just what *I* would do. In any case, we had a fun time at Santa Clara University's KSCU. Remy and Jeff are extremely nice, funny kids, and they keep a clean studio. The set-up was a little unusual - they had two room mics on the instruments, and then three vocal mics plugged into the mixer. No monitoring. It's been a while since we played with no monitoring, but I just closed my eyes and sang on faith and it was okay (I think, since I couldn't hear how off I might have been!). Afterwards we went on Remy's recommendation to a nearby all you can eat pizza joint, aptly named Stuft.
On the drive back we marveled at the fact that it was after 8 pm and the sun was just starting to set. It was a great little taste (very little) of what a tour might be like - all three of us in the van again, listening to music on Chris W's iPod, talking about celebrities and politics and bad, bad movies. I'm looking forward to it.
tuesday, june 17 (03) [link]jane: Dealership is playing a radio show this afternoon! on
KSCU, 103.3 FM. Tune in to Remy's show, 3-6 pm, to hear us play some songs and maybe chat a little. The show will also be webcast - go to the
website and check out the left-hand links for streaming audio.
friday, june 13 (03) [link]chrisw: I'm so not observant! Not!
Several minutes into the set of
The Like Young (who opened at
this show) I found myself scooping up my damaged jaw from the numerous times it banged to the floor. The plushie-adorable, husband-wife duo onstage were minting rock tender - gold standard songs. I set a stance; very rock-star cool, the San Francisco "V": Legs apart in an A-line, arms crossed and folded, drink in left hand. Inside, though, I was jumping around in pretty much the opposing manner: the giddy up-and-down kind.
Bought the albums. Listened. Decided to Google 'em. (Yay, Dear Google. Also: Please ignore nearly anything The Register has to say about you. Professional jealousy turned
commensalism, maybe, I mean, if one had to apply a little psychological dilettantism to their motives.)
Joe Ziemba. Amanda Ziemba. That last name is distinctive...sounds familiar...
Wolfie! In Dealership's early days we'd been compared to Wolfie so many times that you'd think I would've recognized their names sooner. Wolfie was formative in my pop musical development. And here I'd gotten a chance to meet and play with Amanda and Joe
and I didn't even know it.
Well, next time I'm going to say something. Anything. Probably I'll just pet them both and mumble in my best Quasimodo voice "pretty...oh, so pretty..."
~~~
Also, Scrabbel were fantastic. (hey! was that Hellen Jo of
Komisches Buch fame on cello?! i think her very cool comics will be featured at the
upcoming Comics show at 21 Grand that we'll be playing at also... ) You can also check out Scrabbel in July at the Hemlock. Not sure of the date, yet...
If you didn't get a chance to see
New Bethel...it's cause they're on tour and have been cursed by the tour gods. They had transmission problems in Portland and arrived at BotH very late. If we're lucky, we'll get to see 'em again - we might even get to play with them in L.A... Pending, the usual logistic hurdle-jumping...
wednesday, june 11 (03) [link]chrisw: Reporting on stage from Bottom of the Hill...it's very nice up here...
No, really. They have a wireless network!
