monday, july 23 (01) [link]chrisg: i once read somewhere that popcorn is the perfect snack food. i believe that is a lie. after all, how can anything be the perfect whatever if it has such a nasty habit of getting in between your gums and teeth? on top of that, the noxious smell of that icanmostcertainlybelieveitsnotbutter stuff that they put on it reminds me of that smell you get when standing too close to a sewer drain on the corner of a san francisco street. well, the smells are actually quite different, but both produce in me the same convulsive reaction.
"what are the better snack foods?" you might ask. well, if you want to go the healthy route, i take baby carrots over popcorn any day of the week. although you shouldn't eat too many of them. i once knew a girl who ate them all the time (i really mean all the time), and the palms of her hands turned orange. for awhile she tried to pass it off by saying "oh, you don't know? orange is the new flesh." ultimately, though, she resorted to wearing gloves a lot.
i must give my top snack recommendation to red vines. red vines are so good. and, as the package now informs us diet-conscious consumers, they're fat-free! of course, they more than make up for it in the amount of sugar they contain. but let's talk positive points: 1) they taste good, 2)they double as tasty straws for your beverages (do popcorn or carrots do that?), and 3)my experiments have led me to believe that eating too many of these will not turn your hands red.
i don't know why i'm obsessing over snack foods right now. maybe it's because i saw three movies this past week, which is more than i usually see in several months. amazingly enough, all were entertaining. first there was "clueless 2: legally blonde". then there was "final fantasy" (stunningly beautiful, but can you imagine being the person who sat around designing skin pores for months?). finally, there was "hedwig and the angry itch," which i found very entertaining. i never saw the show in new york, though, so i don't know how it compares.

monday, july 16 (01) [link]jane: thanks to all of you who came out last night to cafe du nord. it was great to meet two online buddies, matt, who's putting out the compilation with our cover of "Major Tom" on it, and scott Z of
tweekitten. and some of our old friends were there as well as new ones. the Du Nord can be a great little place sometimes, the atmosphere is quite cozy and it's great to have curtains on the stage! i can't believe that's the first time we've ever played there. thanks to jennifer for setting up the show and to scott Z. for inviting us to play there... hope you all had fun, we did.
in other news: as you read on the front page, we are this close (holds up thumb and forefinger a centimeter apart) to having "tv highway to the stars" printed and wrapped and ready to go. thanks for your patience, and i hope the album won't disappoint. i'm just amazed we got it out. and glad, too. very, very, very happy. now, to start work on the next one.... working title: "SuperSleuth." ok, that's just
my idea, i haven't run it by the chrises yet, but i love the word "sleuth" and i don't think it gets used often enough.
and in totally unrelated news: i have my own website now, it's
umami tsunami. it's still a work in progress but check it out, if you feel like it, and let me know what you think...

sunday, july 15 (01) [link]jane: Long time no post; but maybe that's because we haven't had anything to post about - and now, we do. Yesterday, as many of you know, our dear friends Tom and Dani were wed in eternal bliss at the Great American Music Hall. It was a lovely untraditional ceremony (hey, this is Tom and Dani; not to mention the Great American Music Hall) which which involved story-telling, slam poetry, stones in a glass bowl, and an open bar. Yee-haw! It was also fun to see the indie crowd dressed up, in their fashion.

After 4 hours of hearty eating and drinking and, yes, some dancing (make sure you ask Dan from
Secadora about his very cool moves) we retired to our respective abodes to rest up for the continuation of festivities at the
Stork Club. All three bands played special covers of love for the occasion -
The Get Go added some Duran Duran, as well as a version of the excellent
Bitesize song, "Bee's Knees". Then Mike Henry and Chris W. stormed the stage to sing an acoustic, Simon y Garfunkelized take on the Rod Stewart classic, "Tonight's the Night." We sapped things up (yes, you can use "sap" as a verb) with Barry Manilow and The Carpenters, and
The Smarties closed with the theme from "Maude" and "Always and Forever." Making the memories that will last a lifetime... there's nothing like humiliating yourself in front of your newly married friends and their families to show how much you care.
Til next time,
-jane
